After two years of making my series “The past is a strange place” (still ongoing) it occurred to me I had photographed a lot of birds. “The past is a strange place” is based on photographing random events while living my life.

So instead of thinking: Hey yeah! Now I’m going to make a series about birds, this collection was born after scrolling through my Tumblr seeing birds on different pages.

I love the randomness of making work. At art school the -coming up with an idea and make the work- process, knowing what you’re doing… was almost a holy idea of some of the teachers. But just photographing intuitively and looking back some time later, can work too. It’s not easy to explain something to someone that you don’t understand yourself. Not knowing is the most normal thing that could happen to a person. I never had a problem with it, but I’m surprised how many times not knowing is presented with embarrassment.

Embrace the not knowing. Stand for it when your teachers ask you to explain your work. As it is equal to knowing! Because it is.
