In connection with the release of the new video “I Don’t Want The Summer To End” we did an interview with the Danish singer/DJ Leslie Ming about her latest music project, Devon Seven.
When/how did you get the idea for Devon Seven?
I had been in many different constellations, whether it being bands or working with producers, and I finally decided to do my own thing from scratch. So I bought some equipment and started to compose songs on an old Roland keyboard and producing in Logic. I wanted the process to be natural for me, and for the songs not to be forced. Whatever would come out, would come out. If I want to do a death metal song tomorrow I’ll do it, there are no rules.
How would you describe your style of music?
Even though the first two Devon Seven songs may sound like electronic pop, I don’t want to limit myself to that. I’ll do whatever feels right and whatever turns me on at the moment. I do have limitations though to my own skills. You don’t learn how to produce well overnight. So luckily I met UNKWON who had heard some of my old stuff, and was up for giving me a hand if I needed it, which I felt that I did. I think he is one of the most interesting producers around at the moment, so to have his hands on my project is a blessing. He takes my songs to another level, and he gives them the final touch that makes them sound better than I could imagine.
Favourite song of the moment?
I don’t have a particular favorite song at the moment, but I just finished reading Keith Richards’ “Life”, so I have been listening heavily to songs like “Brown Sugar”, “Angie” and “Start me up”.
What/who are your inspirations?
I’m a big music fan and everything in my life revolves around music. I study music science at university, I’m a dj, and I write music, so I’m very much inspired by music. It can be anyone from The Rolling Stones to Bach to Crystal Castles. I just love learning about music and that motivates me to create new sounds.
What are the future plans for Devon Seven?
I hope I will continue having this musical connection with UNKWON and do more stuff together that will eventually end up in an EP release.
