In February this year the Ukranian photo collective Gorsad released a new book on Perish Publishing. Titled Birds & Bees, the book is an exploration of adolescence and the first manifestations of arrogance, attitude and sexuality. Talking to Them Mag about the book, the Kiev collective says: “This book is about the first impulse of curiosity. It’s about the special period of self-knowledge as a special state of mind… It’s something in between the ‘ban’ and ‘permission’. It’s like when innocent dew meets a drop of poison and it becomes something forbidden, but yet so alluring.’’
Gorsad, who have been featured several times before in Dry, is a trio consisting of two guys and one girl (Victor, Julian and Maria). Through their distinct, hard-hitting style and raw depictions of Ukrainian youth, the trio has gained substantial attention and acclaim on their work dealing with themes such sexuality, street life and war. The trio comment on the rough lives and toxic political landscape of their homeland, but they always manage to avoid any sense of self-pity.
Only few photos from the book has surfaced online, but here Gorsad shares a selection of their beautiful and bold imagery. Enjoy.
