This series titled Tools of Resistance by Sasha Kurmaz consists of items that activists used in confrontations with the police in Kiev, Ukraine 2014. The series was created after the first “victims of the square. The confrontations between the police and the public were very violent and the first deaths occurred on Unity Day, 22 January 2014, during riots on Hrushevskoho Street in Kiev, where three Euromaidan activists were shot dead. On the same day, a dead body of another Euromaidan activist was found on the outskirts of the city; he was kidnapped a day before with Ihor Lutsenko, who was released. These were the first victims to die in demonstrations in Ukraine since gaining national independence in 1991. The deaths caused widespread protests across the country.
“All of these things are original and were taken from the scene immediately after the clashes. I pursued the goal to create not just a picture, but an anthropological document that would provide me with more information for the analysis of past events. In these studies, I wanted to show the objects very clean, on the border between conceptual art and documentary reportage, focusing all the attention on the form and structure of the object.” – Sasha Kurmaz
