Sónar Festival needs no introduction, Barcelona as one of the buzziest European cities needs no introduction, and the artists taking over both the Festival and the off-parties certainly need no introduction. Sónar strives to break boundaries by the off-kilter, left-field acts that are promoted to become headliners the World over. Acts not commonly assorted with the electronic sound with two major cases in point – British pop veterans Duran Duran and Harlem Rapper Asap Rocky…. Dry Magazine presents the acts we are most excited about at Sónar 2015.
An act that will possibly be the most mind-blowing live show at Sónar, besides the obvious Chemical Brothers’ performance. Lotus brings a melting pot of Electronica, Jazz, Rap, Hip Hop, Rnb, Bass… you name it, he’s got it. Touring in support of the psychadelic stand-out release ‘You’re Dead’ and most recently giving a hand in producing Kendrick Lamar’s new record ‘To Pimp a Butterfly’, his sound is all over it. Flying Lotus was proved to be one of the Coachella highlights. Djing inside a spectacular 3D cube with mind-blowing visuals, using a mask and illumanted bug-eyed visuals, will make this act one hell of a ride.
She is a girl from Hamburg, an extremely talented DJ and producer who has been a big part of her city’s electronic community. Helena Hauff is known among the German music enthusiasts, but now she is becoming recognized all over Europe. Releasing music with Actress under his Werkdiscs imprint, alongside spectacular minimal techno sets and alinging herself with new label de riguer Huntley and Palmers from Glasgow, this show will prove to be a highlight we cannot wait for.
Machinedrum and Jimmy Edgar are no strangers to the Sónar vibes. We remember well Machindrum’s live set at Sónar by Day last year at Sónar 2014. Juke, Footwork, Techno… he has got it all, mixing all these influences into his own unmistakable trance. ‘DDD’ could well be the best record ever released. Teaming up with Detroit King Jimmy Edgar in their dynamic double act J.E.T.S., Edgar and Travis Scott, these eccentric playboys, will go down a storm with new songs such as ‘Pink Beat’ that are gonna wet the appetite.
This local boy first came to our attention via a Boiler Room set at the other festival that brings everyone to Barcelona, Primavera Sound. He is holding his own among steller names such as Simian Mobile Disco, Jackmaster, Actress and local hero Pional with his atmospheric Techno and House. The mysterious man has released but a few samples of his music, but leaving us craving for more. A local boy did good, playing an early sunshine set at Sónar by Day… we cannot wait to hear the new ‘Arpheggio’s March’.
